The Gauhati High Court has rejected the bail plea of festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, a key figure in the Zubeen Garg death case. This decision follows a previous dismissal of Mahanta’s bail application by a fast track court in Assam. The High Court’s ruling was influenced by the gravity of the accusations and the ongoing investigation, leading to the denial of bail for the accused.
Legal experts have noted that the court’s refusal to grant bail suggests a critical phase in the investigation. Releasing the accused at this juncture could potentially impact the probe’s integrity. Family members and supporters advocating for justice in the case have welcomed the High Court’s decision as a significant step towards ensuring a fair investigation and trial process.
The death of Zubeen Garg, which occurred while he was swimming near Lazarus Island in Singapore on September 19 last year, forms the core of this case. The unfortunate incident transpired a day before Garg was slated to perform at an event organized under the NEIF banner. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the Assam Police’s Criminal Investigation Department conducted an extensive probe, resulting in a charge sheet being filed in December 2025. Among the seven accused individuals named in the charge sheet, four face murder charges, heightening the case’s sensitivity.
