With the Commonwealth Games 2026 opening ceremony approaching, Glasgow is fully prepared. The city’s venues are set, volunteers are in position, and the transport network is ready. However, the usual excitement from fans seems to be missing at this point.

As one walks around the city center and competition venues, a noticeable calmness prevails. While Glasgow is adorned with banners and Games branding, the anticipated influx of fans has not yet materialized.

Despite the subdued atmosphere, many volunteers remain hopeful. Some suggest that last-minute travel arrangements might bring spectators, while others attribute the quieter buildup to the event’s scaled-down nature.

“This edition differs significantly from past Commonwealth Games,” noted one volunteer. The reduced number of sports has led to fewer participants and fans compared to previous editions. The absence of several traditional Commonwealth sports has shrunk the event’s overall scale, impacting the attendance of delegations and supporters.

Organizers express confidence that the mood will shift once the competitions kick off. Anticipating spectators from Scotland and other Commonwealth nations, they expect the stands to fill up, especially for key events featuring medal contenders.

As Glasgow eagerly awaits, the city stands prepared with venues in order, volunteers enthusiastic, and the countdown nearly over. The opening ceremony on Thursday evening is poised to kindle the sporting fervor that has characterized past Commonwealth Games, demonstrating that even a more compact edition can captivate fans.
