Good weather conditions in Ranchi are expected to benefit athletes participating in the 29th National Senior Athletics Federation Competitions. Tejaswin Shankar, a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist in men’s high jump, highlighted the advantage of the favorable weather. Many top athletes are in agreement as the competition serves as the final chance to qualify for the Indian squads for the Commonwealth Games.
Shankar, aged 27, will be competing in the decathlon in Ranchi, aiming to meet the qualification standard set by the Athletics Federation of India for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. He emphasized the importance of acclimatizing to the local weather conditions for optimal performance across the ten disciplines of the decathlon. The Indian contingent, including Eldhouse Paul who clinched gold in men’s triple jump at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, has high hopes for this event.
With a shift in focus from high jump to decathlon, Shankar expressed confidence in achieving his goals in Ranchi. Sprinter Animesh Kujur, focusing on the 200m event, aims to give his best performance during the four-day competition. Kujur, holding national records in men’s 100m and 200m, emphasized the need for exceptional performance to secure a spot for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
The competition at Ranchi’s Birsa Munda Stadium will witness top Indian track and field athletes in action. The event will also serve as the final selection trials for the National U23 Athletics squad, with talents like Jay Kumar, a promising 400m runner, expected to shine. The opening day will feature medal events in various categories, including the men’s 10,000m, men’s 100m, and 400m rounds, among others.
