Demis Hassabis, CEO and Co-founder of Google DeepMind, shared at the ‘India AI Impact Summit 2026’ that artificial general intelligence (AGI) could become a reality within the next five to eight years. He highlighted the significant opportunities the rapidly growing AI industry offers for India’s youth. Hassabis expressed admiration for the advancements in AI over the past decade and emphasized the critical timing of the India Summit amidst the early stages of autonomous systems emergence.

He underscored the value of global platforms like the India AI Impact Summit in fostering international collaboration. Describing the current AI development phase as a crucial moment, Hassabis compared the world’s entry into a “golden era” of scientific exploration to the dawn of a new epoch. He emphasized the success of reinforcement learning, attributing modern AI’s strength to systems learning directly from data rather than being programmed.

Hassabis also discussed global AI research trends, innovation priorities, and the future prospects of advanced AI systems. He envisioned that AI advancements could lead to breakthroughs across various fields, marking a new era of human advancement. The ‘India AI Impact Summit 2026’ convenes leaders from around the world to deliberate on AI’s role in promoting inclusive growth, enhancing public systems, and fostering sustainable development, representing a significant gathering in the Global South.
