The government has taken action against 300 illegal gambling and betting websites and apps, targeting online sports betting platforms, online casinos, and betting exchanges. These platforms offered various games like slots, roulette, live dealer tables, and operated as peer-to-peer betting marketplaces. The crackdown also included satta/matka gambling networks and real-money card and casino game apps.
This recent move brings the total number of blocked websites for illegal betting and gambling to approximately 8,400, with 4,900 of them being blocked post the Online Gaming Act. The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, approved by Parliament on August 21, 2025, is a significant step to protect citizens from online money games while regulating other online games.
The new law, effective from October 1, 2025, imposes strict penalties for promoting or offering real-money games like poker, rummy, and fantasy sports. Violators could face imprisonment for up to three years along with substantial fines. Additionally, the legislation establishes the Online Gaming Authority of India to oversee the industry, promote safe e-sports, and prohibit stake-based games.
Recognizing the global impact of gaming disorders, the World Health Organization classifies it as a health condition, emphasizing the need for action in India. The government’s initiative aims to address the harm caused by online money gaming platforms, which have led to financial distress, addiction, and even tragic outcomes like suicides.
