The Union government informed Parliament that there are no current plans to raise ethanol blending with petrol above 20%. Any future decision on higher ethanol blends will follow thorough scientific studies and consultations with relevant stakeholders. E85 fuel, comprising 85% ethanol and 15% petrol, is solely for Flex Fuel Vehicles and does not signify a nationwide increase in ethanol blending.

Ethanol usage globally spans over a century, with countries like Brazil long adopting higher ethanol blends. In India, the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme was methodically rolled out with inputs from various stakeholders. Extensive studies have proven E20 to be a safe, cleaner, and technically advanced fuel when used as per specifications and manufacturer guidelines.

The government’s evaluation, based on real-world experience post nationwide implementation, indicates the successful operation of E15+ and E19-E20 fuels for years without widespread engine failures. Manufacturers continue to honor warranties for vehicles using E20 fuel, underscoring its safety and reliability. Laboratory tests and field validations have confirmed that E20 fuel does not lead to abnormal wear or compatibility issues.

Studies suggest that while certain E10-designed vehicles may see a slight reduction in fuel economy, E20 offers benefits like higher-octane rating, cleaner combustion, and improved engine performance. E20 has been found to enhance acceleration, ride quality, and reduce carbon emissions, supporting modern high-compression engines. The transition to E20 has also brought substantial national benefits, including significant savings in foreign exchange and reduced CO2 emissions.
