The government clarified that regular petrol prices for consumers have not increased, with the recent hike limited to the premium fuel category, which constitutes only 3-4% of total petrol sales. Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry’s Joint Secretary, Sujata Sharma, explained that petrol and diesel prices are determined by oil marketing companies (OMCs) as they are deregulated.
OMCs have raised the price of premium petrol by over Rs 2 per litre due to surging global crude prices driven by tensions in West Asia, while regular petrol prices remain unchanged. Sharma assured that domestic LPG supplies are stable without any shortages, and production has been ramped up.
Despite India’s energy reliance on imports, Sharma highlighted the release of more than 13,700 PNG connections to reduce LPG usage pressure. She noted a decrease in panic bookings and the supply of 11,300 tonnes of commercial LPG to consumers in the past week.
Efforts are ongoing to secure LPG supplies, with a focus on diversifying supply sources for stability. Sharma urged state governments to enhance monitoring and enforcement systems for smooth distribution.
