Dismissing viral claims of a severe power crisis in the country, the government’s fact-checking arm PIB Fact Check clarified that there is no coal shortage or grid failure in India. The clarification came after a widely circulated post alleged critical coal shortages at thermal power plants and load-shedding in several states due to a record power demand of 277 GW. The post also raised concerns over evening demand spikes when solar generation drops, potentially stressing the grid.
Refuting these claims, PIB Fact Check emphasized that India’s power system remains stable and adequately supplied. The maximum peak demand recorded on May 2, 2026, was 229 GW, fully met without any shortage. The government assured that coal availability is sufficient, with a total stock of 53.702 million tonnes at thermal power plants, meeting requirements.
The government further stated that power availability across the country is adequate, with grid operations and distribution managed as per established protocols. Addressing concerns about grid stability, the fact-check unit highlighted that existing frequency control mechanisms ensure secure grid operations, even during peak demand periods.
