The government has announced modifications to the Permanent Account Number (PAN) application process, which will be implemented from April 1, 2026. Under the updated regulations, applications for PAN cards based solely on Aadhaar will no longer be accepted after March 31, 2026. Citizens are advised to apply using only Aadhaar before the deadline.
The government-backed Common Services Centres (CSC) shared that currently, individuals can acquire a PAN card using only Aadhaar. However, starting April 1, applicants will need to submit additional documents, including proof of date of birth (DOB), along with Aadhaar. A social media post by CSC emphasized the upcoming changes and urged applicants to act promptly.
Once the revised rules are enforced, applicants must utilize new PAN application forms as the existing ones will no longer be valid. The CSC portal mentioned that new PAN card application forms will be released soon and highlighted the removal of the name from the card in the new fiscal year. Moreover, various documents, such as a birth certificate, voter ID card, or passport, will be accepted as proof of birth.
It was further emphasized that going forward, the names on PAN cards will strictly align with Aadhaar records. Citizens are encouraged to complete PAN-related formalities before the deadline to avoid any complications due to additional documentation requirements. A PAN card is essential for financial and banking transactions, while Aadhaar serves as a unique 12-digit identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India.
Applicants can initiate the PAN application process through the portals of Protean (formerly NSDL eGov), UTI Infrastructure Technology and Services Limited (UTIITSL), or the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal. Previously, concerns were raised about fraudulent activities where scammers sent misleading emails related to ‘download e-PAN card online’ to users. PIB Fact Check warned citizens against responding to such deceptive emails or sharing sensitive financial information.
