Countering the Congress’ claim of hastiness in implementing the Women’s Reservation (Amendment) Bill, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju emphasized the importance of acting promptly. He highlighted that delaying action now might impede the bill’s implementation by the 2029 general elections. Responding to concerns raised by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rijiju expressed readiness to address the issues.

Kharge’s letter criticizing the government’s move to convene a Special Session of Parliament next week without consulting the Opposition prompted a rebuttal from Rijiju. He urged Kharge to collaborate in advancing the necessary amendments for the bill’s progress. Rijiju questioned whether it was preferable to risk a delay in implementation or strive to meet public expectations promptly.

Rijiju refuted the allegations of lack of engagement with the Opposition on the crucial legislation, stating that formal meetings had been conducted with major opposition parties and NDA partners. He reiterated the government’s commitment to early implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam and expressed willingness to engage in further discussions with the Opposition. The minister underscored the significance of timely action on women’s reservations, emphasizing the need to uphold women’s participation in decision-making processes.
