The Gujarat government has earmarked Rs 125 crore for enhancing tourism in the Ukai catchment area, aiming to bolster the rural economy and create job opportunities, as per State Tourism Minister Dr. Jayram Gamit. Speaking at a seminar on “Rural, Tribal, and Wedding Tourism” during the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference in Surat, Gamit emphasized the pivotal role of rural tourism in economic progress. He highlighted that rural and tribal tourism expansion could lead to increased employment and self-employment prospects, ultimately fortifying the rural economy.
Efforts are underway by the state government to develop key tourist spots, including Saputara, with a focus on showcasing agricultural produce, handicrafts, tribal culture, and traditions from rural areas through tourism. Gamit stressed that such initiatives would not only boost the rural economy but also align with the vision of a self-reliant India. He also mentioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s advocacy for economic growth through tourism.
Gamit underscored Gujarat’s tourism potential, citing opportunities in tribal regions, coastline, deserts, and upscale resorts, including the scope for destination wedding tourism. The seminar also featured Tourism Department official H.M. Solanki, who discussed tourism’s contribution to the state’s GDP and outlined plans for tourism development in rural and tribal areas to drive employment. The event drew participation from tour operators, hoteliers, and various stakeholders.
A parallel seminar on “Transforming Chemicals and Petrochemicals in Gujarat” was conducted during the conference, bringing together industry experts and officials to deliberate on future prospects and strategic priorities in the sector. The state government’s Industries Commissioner facilitated the exchange of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with industrialists as part of the program.
