The Gujarat government has recently allocated 4,555 new agricultural power connections in Bhavnagar district, amounting to Rs 66.85 crore over the past two years. Energy Minister Rushikesh Patel affirmed the state’s commitment to providing affordable and quality electricity to bolster the economic progress of farmers. The average cost for a single agricultural power connection, inclusive of infrastructure like poles, lines, transformers, and the High Voltage Distribution System (HVDS), stands at Rs 1.73 lakh.
The state government shoulders the majority of the expenses for these connections, with farmers only required to pay a nominal charge based on the sanctioned load. These initiatives fall under various government schemes aimed at fortifying rural infrastructure and enhancing electricity access for irrigation and other agricultural operations. Additionally, specific concessions are granted to beneficiaries, with farmers from Scheduled Caste communities and tribal areas exempted from fixed charges, only needing to cover general fees such as registration and deposit charges.
In the state budget for 2026–27, the Finance Minister allocated a substantial Rs 24,022 crore to the Agriculture and Farmer Welfare Department, marking a significant portion of the state’s overall budget of Rs 4.08 lakh crore for the year. This allocation is intended to bolster support systems for farmers, enhance rural livelihoods, and promote allied activities like fisheries and livestock.
