Gujarat Police have confiscated more than 1.36 lakh kilograms of narcotics valued at over Rs 13,600 crore and apprehended 5,346 individuals involved in drug trafficking over the past five years. This crackdown is part of the state’s efforts to combat organized drug networks and international smuggling operations. The state’s Director General of Police emphasized the strict implementation of a “zero tolerance” policy towards drug trafficking.
Senior state officials revealed that during the five-year period, over 3,700 cases related to drug trafficking were registered, resulting in the arrest and conviction of 5,346 accused persons. The police conducted strategic operations leading to the seizure of the massive quantity of drugs, which has significantly impacted international drug smuggling networks. Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi praised the police for disrupting trafficking routes effectively.
Gujarat has taken proactive measures to enhance its anti-drug enforcement, becoming the first state in India to introduce a “Drug Reward Policy.” This policy incentivizes police personnel, citizens, and informants who provide valuable intelligence on major drug networks and assist in seizing substantial amounts of narcotics. Additionally, the state government grants “out-of-turn promotions” to police officers who expose international drug rackets at great personal risk.
The state has also implemented an artificial intelligence-based software system called ‘NARIT’ to profile offenders and track criminal networks involved in drug trafficking. This system analyzes criminal records, financial transactions, international connections, and digital footprints to support investigations under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Gujarat has established an Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) and empowered local police stations to directly investigate narcotics cases.
Efforts are underway to establish dedicated anti-narcotics cells in every district to combat drug proliferation in urban and rural areas. In 2020, 315 narcotics cases were registered in Gujarat, with 584 cases reported in the first five months of 2026. Officials attribute this increase to enhanced surveillance and enforcement measures rather than a surge in drug activities. The state’s anti-drug campaign focuses not only on law enforcement but also on rehabilitating individuals affected by addiction.
