Gujarat Police successfully located 1,470 missing individuals, including women and children, through the month-long ‘Operation Milap’. Launched on May 7, the campaign aimed to reunite missing persons with their families. The state had reported 24,767 missing people since 2007, leading to a focused review of unresolved cases.
Surat City Police led in recoveries, finding 341 missing persons. The operation involved a thorough examination of old case files, field verification, and the use of technology and intelligence. Despite the conclusion of the special drive, police will continue efforts to address missing persons cases.
Gujarat’s Director General of Police, G.S. Malik, emphasized ongoing police commitment to missing persons cases. Ajay Choudhary, Additional Director General of Police of CID Crime (Women Cell), highlighted the campaign’s use of intelligence and technology for investigations. The operation’s success was attributed to detailed reviews, field verifications, and collaboration with other states.
Preliminary findings revealed that adolescent girls were the largest group among missing persons. Reasons for disappearances included romantic relationships, runaway incidents, parental issues, academic stress, and domestic conflicts. The operation also addressed cases of missing members from migrant labor families.
