With the initial phase of Census 2027 starting, over 3.74 lakh individuals in Gujarat have already completed self-enumeration. This marks the beginning of India’s first fully digital census, as officials gear up for the extensive exercise. The census, the country’s 16th and the eighth since Independence, will be conducted in two phases across Gujarat and the rest of India, following the previous one in 2011.
Announcing the commencement of the exercise, Census Director Sujal Mayatra encouraged all citizens to actively take part in the nationwide enumeration program. The House Listing and Housing Census will run from June 1 to June 30, covering various aspects such as housing conditions, family details, drinking water sources, toilet facilities, and other assets. Enumerators will pose a total of 33 questions during this phase.
The first phase, known as the House Listing and Housing Census (HLO), will focus on gathering data on housing conditions, household composition, access to drinking water, sanitation facilities, and other assets. This survey will span all districts, municipal corporations, municipalities, and villages across Gujarat. The second phase, involving Population Enumeration (PE) and caste enumeration, is scheduled between February 9 and February 28, 2027.
During the second phase, which includes population and caste enumeration, officials will also conduct the caste census exercise nationwide. The self-enumeration campaign in Gujarat, which began on May 17, saw participation from various dignitaries and citizens, with over 3.74 lakh citizens having completed self-enumeration forms for Census 2027 by May 30.
