Heavy rain, accompanied by hail and a thunderstorm, hit Bengaluru, causing inconvenience to the public. The downpour led to the collapse of a compound wall at Bowring Hospital, resulting in the deaths of seven people, including three children. Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the incident.
The compound wall, made of cement and bricks, collapsed near the accident ward gate during the intense rain. Reports indicate that one person is in critical condition, with most victims being roadside vendors. The presence of children was due to the ongoing summer vacation, and two women are among the deceased.
Emergency services, police, and fire department personnel are on-site, conducting debris clearance operations. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar expressed his intention to verify the incident details and visit the spot. Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh has also arrived at the scene.
The heavy rain, lasting nearly an hour, caused waterlogging on major roads and damage to parked vehicles from falling tree branches. Initially welcomed after a month of intense heat, the prolonged downpour soon became troublesome for residents. Rainwater even entered the Banashankari Metro station, flooding the ticket counter area.
