Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to persist in various northeastern states over the next five to six days, as per the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) warning. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are anticipated across the region due to the advancement of the southwest monsoon. The IMD officials have stated that conditions are conducive for the southwest monsoon to progress into more parts of the Northeast in the next two to three days after its onset in Kerala.
The monsoon has already moved into parts of the Bay of Bengal, setting the stage for increased rainfall activity in the region. The weather office has predicted widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura in the upcoming week. Wind speeds could reach 40-50 kmph in various areas, especially on June 6 and 7.
Isolated heavy rainfall is highly likely over Assam and Meghalaya on June 4 and 5 and again on June 10. Additionally, isolated very heavy rainfall is expected between June 6 and 9. Arunachal Pradesh is forecasted to experience very heavy rainfall on June 4 and during June 6-9, with heavy rain expected on June 5 and June 10. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are also set to receive heavy rainfall from June 5 to 10.
The IMD has observed an increase in intense weather activity in the region. Arunachal Pradesh saw very heavy rainfall in the 24 hours leading up to 8.30 a.m. on Thursday, while isolated heavy rainfall was reported in Assam and Meghalaya. Officials have warned of potential waterlogging, local flooding, traffic disruptions, and landslides in vulnerable hilly areas due to heavy rainfall. Residents are advised to stay informed through weather updates and take necessary precautions during periods of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
