In Maharashtra, incessant rainfall in the past week has caused severe disruptions, leading to flood-like situations in various districts. Rivers and local water bodies are overflowing, disrupting connectivity and submerging low-lying areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a reduction in monsoon intensity from Wednesday, with light to moderate showers expected mainly in the Konkan coast and ghat regions.
The IMD has issued alerts for parts of Maharashtra due to local vulnerabilities, with coastal districts like Palghar, Raigad, and Ratnagiri under a yellow alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas. Despite waterlogging in Mumbai’s Worli Village, the city experienced temporary relief with operational road transit and minor disruptions in suburban railway networks.
Extreme caution is advised in Pune and Satara’s ghat regions due to heavy downpours, while Pune city expects light to moderate showers. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are likely in areas like Akola, Amravati, Buldhana, and Wardha, with moderate rain expected in other districts like Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, and Nashik.
The state faced a severe cloudburst threat initially in Nashik, but the situation shifted towards Palghar and Gujarat, reducing the risk. Continuous heavy rainfall has significantly impacted water reservoir levels, necessitating flood management measures. Pune’s key water systems are filled to capacity, leading to controlled releases from the Khadakwasla Dam into the Mutha River.
Floodwaters have affected residential areas in Pune, with relief operations underway and the Mayor coordinating evacuations in vulnerable zones. In Alandi, the Indrayani River flooding has submerged bridges, disrupting local transport and causing property damage. Marathwada awaits relief as the Jayakwadi Dam struggles with lower water levels compared to last year.
Transport networks face intermittent disruptions, with landslides in Varandha Ghat and ongoing clearance operations. In Eastern Maharashtra, recent showers have benefited the agrarian community, particularly in Bhandara district, reviving agricultural activities post a dry June.
