Actor-politician Hema Malini expressed concerns about “cultural fascism” in West Bengal, highlighting it as a security risk and a threat to livelihoods. She shared this in a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, emphasizing the adverse impact on individuals in the cultural sphere. Refraining from specifics, Malini mentioned that her personal experience prompted this action.
The term ‘cultural fascism’ refers to the systematic control and censorship of a nation’s cultural aspects based on a particular ideology. Last year, allegations arose regarding the film ‘The Bengal Files’ facing an unofficial ban in West Bengal before its release. Despite the state government denying involvement and citing screen space issues, producers claimed suppression due to the film’s sensitive content.
BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty criticized the West Bengal government for hindering ‘The Bengal Files’ release and labeling another film as “propaganda.” Chakraborty questioned the government’s actions, highlighting the challenges faced by the film’s release. He emphasized the importance of addressing such issues and ensuring fair treatment in the cultural domain.
