Hidden Power Struggle Emerges in Mumbai’s Mahayuti Alliance After BMC Election Results

Following the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) election results, a power struggle has surfaced within the Mahayuti alliance. Despite securing a majority, a rift over the mayoral post has arisen between the BJP and Shiv Sena. The Mumbai BJP has issued a directive for its corporators to stay in the city for 10 days.

The BJP, with 89 corporators, fell short of the BMC control threshold, necessitating support from Shiv Sena’s 29 corporators. Leveraging their position, Shiv Sena is firm on claiming the Mayor’s post. To prevent splits, Shiv Sena moved its corporators to a hotel, signaling the start of “hotel politics.”

With the mayoral post lottery on January 22, the political climate is tense. Chief Minister Fadnavis is away at Davos and is expected back on January 24 for final decisions. The next 72 hours will be crucial in determining the mayoral crown holder in Mumbai.
