A shocking incident in Bangladesh has left the nation in disbelief as a 23-year-old Hindu man, Chanchal Chandra Bhowmik, was burned alive while sleeping in a garage in Narsingdi, near Dhaka. Bhowmik, a resident of Lakshmipur village in Cumilla district, was attacked by unidentified individuals who set the garage on fire where he was resting after work. The rapid spread of the fire, fueled by petrol and other flammable materials, resulted in Bhowmik’s tragic death due to severe burn injuries and suffocation.
Local reports suggest that the attack on Bhowmik was a premeditated act of violence, with eyewitnesses labeling it as a “planned murder.” Authorities have obtained CCTV footage from nearby cameras capturing the perpetrators in the act, although their identities remain unknown. Police officials have assured a thorough investigation into the case, emphasizing the seriousness of the incident and the ongoing efforts to identify and apprehend the culprits.
The incident has reignited concerns over the safety of minority communities in Bangladesh, particularly the Hindu population, which constitutes around 8% of the country’s total population. Recent weeks have witnessed a surge in violence against Hindus, with several disturbing incidents coming to light. These include the fatal beating of a Hindu sweetshop owner in Gazipur district, a Hindu household being set ablaze in Sylhet district, and the stabbing death of a Hindu autorickshaw driver in Feni district. These events have heightened anxieties among minority groups in Bangladesh, especially with national elections looming and increasing scrutiny on the government’s ability to safeguard vulnerable populations from extremist threats.
