In a significant stride toward promoting religious diversity and interfaith harmony in the United States, several city and town council meetings across South Carolina will begin with Hindu prayers in the coming weeks. These invocations will be led by Rajan Zed, a renowned Hindu statesman and interfaith leader known for advocating inclusion and universal values through Vedic traditions.

A Landmark for Religious Inclusion in Local Governance
As part of a broader effort to reflect the multicultural fabric of American society, city councils in towns such as Mauldin, Irmo, Cayce, West Columbia, and others have invited Hindu spiritual prayers to open their official proceedings. These invocations will include ancient Sanskrit mantras from Hindu scriptures like the Rig Veda, Upanishads, and Bhagavad Gita, followed by English translations for the broader audience.

The prayers will focus on peace, compassion, unity, and universal well-being — values that transcend religious boundaries and contribute to civic harmony.

Rajan Zed: Voice of Hindu Representation in the West
Rajan Zed, President of the Universal Society of Hinduism, has previously delivered Hindu invocations at legislative bodies including the United States Senate and state legislatures across the country. His efforts have opened doors for interfaith dialogue and cultural understanding, creating space for Hindu philosophy within formal civic platforms.

Speaking about the upcoming events, Zed emphasized that spiritual diversity strengthens democracy and allows all voices to be heard in public governance.

“Opening meetings with Hindu prayers brings an inclusive and respectful tone to the process of decision-making,” he said.

Fostering a Spirit of Unity in South Carolina
South Carolina’s decision to welcome Hindu invocations is seen as a progressive move toward inclusivity, particularly at a time when embracing diversity is more important than ever. Local leaders have expressed support for initiatives that celebrate the cultural and religious pluralism of their communities.

These events symbolize not just a moment of reflection before civic discussions, but also an acknowledgment of the growing contributions of Indian-Americans and the Hindu community in various parts of the United States.
