Hyderabad Police Commissioner V. C. Sajjanar emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards Chinese Manja, a banned item in Telangana, due to its harmful effects. This hazardous material has caused severe injuries and fatalities to pedestrians, motorcyclists, birds, and animals. Special police teams have been established to crack down on the illegal production, storage, transportation, and sale of Chinese Manja.
The Police Commissioner issued a stern warning, stating that strict legal actions will be taken against anyone involved in the manufacturing or selling of Chinese Manja. He urged citizens to intervene if they witness the use of this dangerous item, emphasizing the importance of raising awareness about its risks. Recent incidents have left several individuals, including motorcyclists and a student, with serious neck injuries due to the sharp glass-coated nylon thread.
Despite the ban on Chinese Manja, its usage for kite flying continues unchecked, as highlighted by recent accidents. The Cyberabad police have issued a public advisory cautioning against the use and sale of nylon and Chinese Manja, citing the significant threat it poses to human life, animals, and birds. In a tragic incident in 2024, an Army jawan lost his life in Hyderabad after his throat was slit by Chinese Manja while riding a scooty on Indira Reddy Flyover.
Authorities had previously imposed a ban on Manja in 2016 to protect birds and ensure human safety. The forest department has taken steps to enforce the ban on Manja during the Sankranti festival, emphasizing the importance of compliance with the regulations to safeguard lives and wildlife.
