Rafael Mariano Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), praised India for achieving criticality of the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor in Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu. This milestone signifies a significant advancement in India’s indigenous nuclear program and its commitment to long-term energy sustainability. Grossi, in a statement, lauded India’s progress in attaining criticality at the Kalpakkam facility, emphasizing its importance for fuel sustainability and the future of nuclear energy.

The IAEA Director General expressed the organization’s dedication to supporting India’s nuclear program, ensuring its safe and secure development. Grossi also extended congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this accomplishment. Achieving criticality in a fast breeder reactor is a crucial technical stage where the nuclear chain reaction becomes self-sustaining, allowing the reactor to generate more fuel than it consumes.

The Kalpakkam facility plays a pivotal role in India’s three-stage nuclear power strategy, aimed at utilizing the nation’s abundant thorium reserves for enhanced fuel efficiency and reduced reliance on imported uranium. This recognition from the global nuclear watchdog underscores India’s expertise in advanced reactor technology and its commitment to safety and security standards. The achievement is anticipated to bolster India’s position in the global nuclear energy sector, fostering collaboration with the IAEA in research, training, and technology advancement.

Experts consider the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor as a crucial step towards commercial fast breeder operations, essential for meeting India’s increasing energy needs through clean, reliable, and sustainable sources. This development aligns with the government’s vision of expanding nuclear capacity to support economic growth and environmental objectives. Grossi’s message has been well-received within scientific and policy circles in India, uplifting morale among nuclear professionals involved in this indigenous project. With the IAEA’s ongoing support, India is poised to advance its nuclear expansion plans while upholding the highest safety and non-proliferation standards.

The achievement at Kalpakkam comes at a time when the world seeks scalable, low-carbon energy solutions, positioning India’s progress as a model for responsible nuclear development in emerging economies. Officials have indicated that updates on the reactor’s operational performance and integration into the national grid will be shared in the future.
