Despite the implementation of prohibition in Bihar, the illegal liquor trade remains a significant challenge. Recently, a raid conducted by the Prohibition and Excise Department at Saharsa’s old bus stand uncovered a substantial amount of Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) hidden beneath soil. A total of 123 liters of liquor, packed in Officer’s Choice brand pouches, were seized from multiple locations during the operation.
The raid resulted in the apprehension of two suspected liquor smugglers, with one minor also placed under protective custody. The arrested individuals, identified as Arvind Sah and Jeetu Kumar, are facing legal proceedings in accordance with the Juvenile Justice Act. The Excise Department has taken possession of the confiscated liquor and filed a case under the Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act.
Authorities are currently interrogating the accused to ascertain the origins of the liquor consignment, the recipients of the illegal supply, and other individuals involved in the smuggling network. The Excise Department emphasized its commitment to combating illegal liquor activities, including production, storage, transportation, and sales. Stringent legal measures will be enforced against those violating the state’s prohibition laws.
The operation was based on specific intelligence indicating the storage of liquor beneath a soil mound at the old bus stand for subsequent distribution. Bihar has maintained a prohibition policy since 2016, with ongoing efforts by authorities to crack down on illicit alcohol production and trafficking.
