The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds in 15 states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Punjab. The alert mentions the likelihood of intense weather activity on May 16, urging people to be cautious. Wind speeds of 80 to 85 kmph are expected in various regions, with North Indian states bracing for severe storms and hailstorm warnings in some areas.
The IMD has specifically alerted about thunderstorms and rainfall in six districts of Punjab, with Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Fazilka, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, and Muktsar likely to experience severe thunderstorms accompanied by lightning. Additionally, strong winds reaching 40 to 50 kmph are forecasted for these districts. Meanwhile, a ‘Yellow Alert’ has been issued for heatwave conditions in parts of Punjab from May 16 to May 20.
In Delhi, residents woke up to a pleasant morning following dust storms and gusty winds the previous day. However, the IMD predicts a significant temperature rise in Delhi-NCR in the coming days, with the maximum temperature expected to surpass 40 degrees Celsius on Saturday. Despite earlier forecasts of thunderstorms and light rainfall, hot and dry conditions are anticipated to prevail in the region.
Delhi is likely to experience a maximum temperature of 41 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 24 degrees Celsius on May 16 under clear skies. The temperature may escalate further to 42 degrees Celsius on May 17, with partly cloudy conditions and the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning activity.
