The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has alerted 19 districts in Tamil Nadu about an impending heatwave, cautioning residents about the risk of heat-related illnesses due to high temperatures and humidity. The districts, including Madurai, Vellore, and Erode, are expected to face heatwave conditions, urging people to avoid sun exposure and stay hydrated, especially during peak afternoon hours. IMD forecasts the persistence of heatwave conditions in certain districts like Virudhunagar and Madurai on Friday, with a slight relief expected due to changes in wind speed and light rainfall in some areas.
The prevailing weather pattern indicates that the intense heat may continue for another day in parts of Tamil Nadu, particularly in the interior regions. While light rainfall is anticipated in Western Ghats districts until Saturday, some relief from the scorching temperatures is expected. On Friday, moderate rainfall is predicted in a few places in the north coastal districts, with scattered showers likely in various parts of the state. Despite the rain, high temperatures coupled with humidity levels are likely to cause discomfort along the coastal regions until July 17.
The combination of high temperatures and humidity is set to create uncomfortable weather conditions in Chennai, with the mercury expected to touch around 39 degrees Celsius on Thursday. Authorities advise the public, especially vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and those with health issues, to limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours and ensure adequate hydration. The state is currently experiencing one of the hottest spells of the season, emphasizing the need for precautionary measures to combat the extreme weather conditions.
