Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K. Selvaperunthagai’s claims of harassment by Income Tax officials were dismissed by the Central Board of Direct Taxes. The Department stated that no search or enforcement action was taken against Selvaperunthagai on April 20 or recently, refuting his allegations of confinement and interference with election-related activities.
The Income Tax Department clarified that no restrictions were imposed on Selvaperunthagai’s movement and denied searching his residence in Kilpauk, Chennai. It explained that routine verification exercises were conducted in specific areas of the Sriperumbudur constituency based on intelligence inputs regarding suspicious cash movements, emphasizing that these activities were unrelated to the Congress leader.
Emphasizing that the verification activities did not involve Selvaperunthagai or yield any actionable findings, the Department condemned what it termed as false and misleading statements. The matter has been reported to the Election Commission of India, and a complaint has been filed with the Chennai Police Commissioner for spreading false information and defamatory allegations against a government department.
