The Coal Ministry announced that India has reached the milestone of producing 1 billion tonnes of coal for the second consecutive year. This achievement, attained on March 20, highlights the nation’s increasing self-sufficiency in the energy sector and its dedication to ensuring a continuous fuel supply to vital industries. The sustained coal production levels have enabled India to meet the growing energy demands while assisting the power sector in maintaining high coal stock levels at thermal power plants.
The ministry emphasized that this accomplishment is a result of meticulous planning, effective execution, and enhanced coordination throughout the coal value chain, significantly contributing to the country’s economic progress. In February, India’s core infrastructure industries’ combined index rose by 2.3%, with coal production increasing by 2.3% and electricity generation by 0.5% compared to the previous year.
India’s Coal Ministry remains resolute in creating a stable, transparent, and performance-oriented environment. By implementing proactive policies, closely monitoring performance, and engaging with stakeholders, the ministry ensures consistent coal availability and smooth operations across various sectors. Despite the crisis in West Asia, Indian thermal power plants possess sufficient coal stocks of approximately 53.41 million tonnes, adequate for nearly 23 days at the current consumption rate.
Coal India Limited is actively ensuring coal supply to all consumers, including small and medium enterprises. Stocks are also being accumulated at coal mining companies’ sites as a precautionary measure to address any potential disruptions in oil and gas supplies.
