India reached a significant milestone in indigenous aero-engine technology by successfully creating the nation’s first expendable turbojet engine in the 350 kg thrust category. This achievement was made possible through the efforts of the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) in collaboration with Azad Engineering of Hyderabad. The engine was delivered to GTRE on July 22, signifying a crucial advancement in India’s quest for self-reliance in advanced aerospace and defence technologies.

GTRE partnered with Azad Engineering for the manufacturing and assembly of the engine, marking a strategic move towards enhancing indigenous capabilities in this critical sector. The successful development and delivery of the engine underscore years of meticulous engineering, cutting-edge manufacturing techniques, and a strong synergy between India’s scientific and industrial sectors. This accomplishment is a testament to India’s growing prowess in mastering intricate jet engine technology, a domain dominated by only a select few nations globally.

Jet engine technology is renowned for its complexity, demanding unparalleled precision, advanced metallurgical expertise, and rigorous manufacturing standards. The successful realization of the engine based on DRDO’s design showcases the evolving technological prowess of India’s defence industry and its capacity to produce highly sophisticated propulsion systems. The formal handover of the engine took place as Azad Engineering’s CEO, Rakesh Chopdar, presented it to Dr K. Rajalakshmi Menon, Distinguished Scientist and Director General (Aeronautical Systems), and Dr S.V. Ramanamurty, Outstanding Scientist and Director of GTRE.

In recognition of this achievement, Defence Secretary and DRDO Chairman Rajesh Kumar Singh extended congratulations to GTRE and its industry collaborator, lauding their joint efforts in realizing the vision of an indigenous expendable turbojet engine. This accomplishment marks a historic milestone for India’s aerospace and defence landscape, showcasing the nation’s progress in developing critical military technologies. The successful development of this engine is poised to bolster India’s indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities, aligning with the broader objective of achieving self-reliance in crucial defence technologies.
