India and France jointly opened the Indo French Centre for AI in Health (IF-CAIH) at AIIMS in New Delhi. The inauguration, attended by Union Health Minister JP Nadda and French President Emmanuel Macron, marks a significant milestone in enhancing healthcare cooperation and emerging technologies between the two nations. The center’s primary objective is to advance AI-driven research, medical education, and clinical innovation to tackle intricate healthcare challenges.
Macron emphasized the importance of India and France developing their sovereign AI capabilities and talent pool to ensure that AI progress benefits humanity without relying excessively on a few dominant global players. He highlighted the substantial potential of ethical AI integration, especially in healthcare, to boost efficiency and expedite scientific breakthroughs. Macron also stressed the necessity of responsible governance in AI, advocating for measures to safeguard children, enhance algorithm transparency to combat bias and democratic threats, and preserve linguistic diversity in AI systems—a shared vision between India and France.
The IF-CAIH establishment follows a Joint Memorandum of Understanding signed among AIIMS New Delhi, Sorbonne University, and Paris Brain Institute. This initiative also fosters academic collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and prominent French institutions, fostering interdisciplinary research in artificial intelligence, brain health, and global healthcare systems. It further builds upon the existing institutional partnership between India and France in critical areas like Digital Health, Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), Human Resources for Health, and the responsible utilization of health data.
Macron affirmed the commitment of India and France to nurturing the computational capacity and expertise essential for developing their trusted AI systems, emphasizing the imperative of reducing dependence on externally developed technologies. The government underscores its dedication to deepening healthcare collaboration with France, leveraging innovation, shared democratic principles, and combined knowledge to construct robust health systems and deliver improved health outcomes for populations in India and worldwide.
