India and Tanzania recently convened the fourth Joint Defence Cooperation Committee (JDCC) meeting in Zanzibar to discuss collaboration in military training, maritime security, and defence industry partnerships. The meeting, co-chaired by Defence Ministry’s Joint Secretary of International Cooperation, Amitabh Prasad, focused on enhancing cooperation in various sectors such as cyber and artificial intelligence.
During the meeting, officials from both nations explored new avenues for cooperation, including counter-terrorism, peacekeeping training, and expertise in areas like EW, Cyber, and AI. In a separate event last year, naval officials from India and Tanzania engaged in talks to strengthen ongoing cooperation and enhance maritime security coordination.
The historical relationship between India and Tanzania has been characterized by close, friendly, and cooperative ties. From the 1960s to the 1980s, both countries shared commitments to anti-colonialism, non-alignment, and South-South Cooperation. The bilateral relationship was further elevated to a strategic partnership during the state visit of Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan to India in 2023.
