India has strongly criticized the recent attacks on commercial shipping in the vital Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing the need to maintain free navigation. During a Security Council meeting, India’s Deputy Permanent Representative Yojna Patel expressed concern over military targeting of commercial ships, labeling such actions as deplorable. Although not directly naming any country, Patel referenced Iran in connection with attacks on its Middle East neighbors, highlighting India’s co-sponsorship of a resolution condemning such actions.
The Deputy Permanent Representative highlighted Iran’s attacks on Indian ships and vessels bound for India, resulting in casualties among Indian sailors. Additionally, the United States has implemented a blockade in the region, further complicating the situation. Patel reiterated India’s stance against the targeting of commercial shipping and the endangerment of civilian crew members, emphasizing the importance of unimpeded navigation in the Strait of Hormuz for India’s trade and energy security.
Emphasizing the significance of the Gulf region to India, Patel stressed the safety and well-being of the nearly 10 million Indians residing and working there. She called for diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions in the region, citing India’s vested interest in the security and stability of the Middle East. India views the Middle East as a crucial neighbor and recognizes the region’s impact on its economy and energy security.
