India offered its condolences to Thailand following a tragic train accident in the country’s northeastern region. The incident, which occurred on January 14, 2026, involved a crane collapse that derailed a passenger train in Nakhon Ratchasima province, resulting in 32 fatalities and around 70 injuries. The Ministry of External Affairs expressed deep sadness over the loss of lives and injuries, extending sympathies to the affected families and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.
The accident took place when a construction crane collapsed onto a train traveling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province. Nakhon Ratchasima Governor Chaiwat Chuenkosum mentioned that efforts are underway to clear the wreckage and restore normal operations, with an expected timeline of about seven days. Simultaneously, a thorough investigation is being conducted to determine the cause of the tragic event.
Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, emphasized the need for a transparent and comprehensive investigation to identify the accident’s cause and prevent similar incidents in the future. Reports indicate that the main contractor for the railway section involved is Italian-Thai Development PLC, which has pledged to take full responsibility for compensation and medical treatment related to the accident.
