In a significant development for India-Nepal rail connectivity, the first-ever direct commercial container freight train, with 40 wagons carrying canola, completed its journey from Kolkata Port to Biratnagar Customs Yard in Nepal. Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) officials highlighted this as a milestone under the revised India-Nepal Rail Transit Protocol, streamlining cross-border freight transportation. The seamless operation of the train from Kolkata Port to Biratnagar is set to reduce transit time, logistics costs, and cargo handling, enhancing trade efficiency between the two nations.
The successful movement of the freight train signifies the operationalization of the revised transit framework, enabling direct rail transportation of bulk cargo without transshipment at the border. This achievement is expected to have a positive impact on trade between India and Nepal, fostering bilateral commerce and strengthening logistics efficiency. The broad-gauge rail link between Bihar’s Jogbani (India) and Biratnagar (Nepal), inaugurated in June 2023 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the former Prime Minister of Nepal, laid the foundation for this milestone.
Following the signing of the revised Letter of Exchange in November 2025, direct commercial rail movement to Nepal has become a reality, marking a significant step in enhancing regional connectivity through modern railway infrastructure. The Northeast Frontier Railway’s role in bolstering international rail connectivity and promoting seamless cross-border trade has been underscored by this achievement. This initiative is poised to further India’s commitment to strengthening regional ties and facilitating efficient cross-border trade through customer-centric railway services.
The successful completion of the Agartala-Akhaura (Bangladesh) rail link project by NFR, which is nearing its conclusion, is expected to further enhance rail connectivity between the Northeastern states of India and Bangladesh. This project is anticipated to play a crucial role in fostering improved trade relations and economic partnerships between the two countries.
