India has solidified its position as a key ally for climate-vulnerable island nations like Seychelles through island diplomacy, focusing on maritime security cooperation and climate resilience. A recent report highlighted India’s efforts to support Seychelles’ security and blue economy while balancing geopolitical interests with local legitimacy. The report emphasized the strategic importance of small island nations in the Indo-Pacific region, noting the growing maritime competition in the Western Indian Ocean.
The establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles for 50 years has coincided with a significant state visit by Seychelles’ President, Patrick Herminie, to India. This visit underscored the deepening ties between the two nations and highlighted Seychelles’ role in India’s vision for security and growth across regions. India has committed a Special Economic Package of USD 175 million to enhance maritime security and sustainable development in Seychelles, aligning with shared priorities in maritime security, development cooperation, and climate resilience.
Seychelles, with a vast Exclusive Economic Zone vulnerable to Somali pirate attacks, relies on enhanced maritime surveillance and counter-piracy measures for national security. India’s strategic role in the region is crucial for containing piracy threats, with the Indian Navy actively involved in mission-based deployments in the Gulf of Aden. Through initiatives like the Information Fusion Centre-Indian Ocean Region, India aims to strengthen maritime security by sharing real-time information with partner countries, reinforcing its position as a net security provider in the region.
India and Seychelles are enhancing naval interoperability to address maritime governance challenges, fostering a cooperative security framework. While China offers rapid infrastructure development to Seychelles through centrally financed projects, India’s partnership-driven approach focuses on capacity-building and self-reliance through South-South cooperation. By prioritizing local institutions and human resource development, India aims to establish long-term sustainable partnerships with Seychelles.
