India called in Iranian diplomats, including Deputy Chief of Mission Mohammad Javad Hosseini, after an assault on United Arab Emirates (UAE) merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz resulted in the death of an Indian and injuries to several others. The strike by Iran on UAE oil tankers in Omani waters led to the fatality of an Indian sailor and left six others wounded, prompting the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to summon the Iranian envoys.
Two UAE tankers, Mombasa and Al Bahiyah, were targeted by Iranian cruise missiles in the southern part of the Strait of Hormuz. The Indian Embassy in the UAE expressed condolences for the loss of the Indian seafarer and assured close monitoring of the situation.
The attack on the UAE vessels caused significant material damage and fires on board, which have now been contained, as confirmed by the UAE’s Ministry of Defence. Strongly denouncing the assault as a breach of international law endangering regional security, the Ministry emphasized the UAE’s right to retaliate and safeguard its interests, people, and assets.
