India expressed gratitude to the Portugal government and law enforcement for their assistance in extraditing Abhay Rana, a wanted fugitive, back to India. The Central Bureau of Investigation, in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs, successfully managed the extradition process. The Indian Embassy in Lisbon also acknowledged the Portuguese authorities for their cooperation in this matter.
Abhay Rana, facing serious charges, will now face trial in Indian courts following his extradition from Portugal. The extradition was carried out under the bilateral agreement between India and Portugal, triggered by an Interpol Red Notice. This move is part of India’s ongoing efforts to bring back fugitives from foreign countries.
The extradition of Abhay Rana signifies a significant achievement for the Indian government in its pursuit of fugitives abroad. The success of this operation was attributed to the close coordination between various Indian ministries, Haryana Police, and the Embassy of India in Lisbon, along with Portuguese law enforcement agencies. Abhay Rana, also known as Abhay alias Abhay Rana, was wanted by the Haryana Police for multiple criminal offenses, including extortion, intimidation, and operating a criminal syndicate.
Investigators disclosed that Abhay Rana and his associates allegedly used social media platforms to threaten local businessmen in Haryana, demanding ransom payments. Failure to comply reportedly led to assaults by the syndicate members. A charge sheet was filed against Abhay Rana in a case registered in Karnal district, and after due legal procedures, the Portuguese authorities approved his extradition to India.
