India is gearing up to host the BWF World Championships for the first time in 17 years, a significant moment for badminton and Indian sports, according to former All England winner Pullela Gopichand. Gopichand expressed confidence that hosting the event in Delhi could give Indian athletes a boost in their medal aspirations.
The 30th edition of the BWF World Championships is scheduled to take place in New Delhi from August 17 to 23, with the event marking its return to India after nearly two decades. The launch event saw the presence of key figures like Badminton Association of India (BAI) president and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, along with other officials.
Looking ahead, Gopichand highlighted the importance of the upcoming international calendar, emphasizing that the World Championships will be immediately followed by the Asian Games. He noted the critical period ahead for India’s top shuttlers and the potential advantage of competing in familiar home conditions.
Addressing concerns about the busy schedule, Gopichand mentioned that Indian players are accustomed to handling multiple major events throughout the season. He emphasized the experience and adaptability of Indian shuttlers in dealing with packed calendars and expressed optimism about the support they would receive from local conditions and crowds.
Reflecting on India’s preparations for hosting the prestigious tournament, Gopichand praised the country’s improved infrastructure and event management. He expressed confidence that the championships would offer a memorable experience for both players and fans, highlighting the positive changes in the stadium and organization.
