India is set to mandate blending isobutanol with diesel to enhance energy security and decarbonize the road sector. This initiative, expected to roll out later this year, aims to significantly impact diesel consumption, which currently surpasses petrol usage. Additionally, the Ministry of Roads Transport and Highways plans to introduce a draft notification on truck-trailer regulations to facilitate battery swapping and charging for electric heavy-duty commercial vehicles.
The Ministry is exploring innovative solutions like tractor-trailer interchangeability to address challenges related to battery charging for electric trucks. By enabling the swapping of the entire front part of the truck instead of just the battery, this approach aims to minimize downtime during charging processes. Moreover, the government’s experiments with hydrogen logistics have shown promising results, with hydrogen refueling stations being the primary cost concern.
Hydrogen buses have been introduced in Delhi, connecting the city with Faridabad and Noida, showcasing the viability of hydrogen as a fuel source for public transport. These buses can travel up to 450 km before requiring a refill, indicating the potential for establishing refueling stations along major highways. Furthermore, the implementation of Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system, aimed at enhancing traffic flow by eliminating toll plaza stops, is on track for nationwide expansion within the upcoming year.
To improve vehicle speed and traffic flow efficiency, the Ministry plans to prioritize expressways and access-controlled highways. This strategic focus on segregating slow-moving and fast-moving traffic is expected to enhance overall road transport efficiency and safety.
