As India gears up to host the AI Impact Summit, Jeff Cotten, President and CEO of PROS, emphasized the need for India to enhance its infrastructure to stay competitive, particularly against China’s platform-focused approach in AI. Cotten highlighted the importance of investing in capital infrastructure and engineering expertise to secure a leading position in AI. India, known as a significant tech market and a major global labor supplier, must go beyond just engineering talent for sustained AI leadership.

The AI Impact Summit coincides with shifting global perspectives on AI. Cotten acknowledged the prevailing enthusiasm for AI but noted a tempering of expectations. He mentioned a reevaluation of early assumptions regarding AI’s impact on entire industries. Despite concerns, Cotten dismissed the notion that AI would render SaaS companies obsolete, emphasizing the enduring need for traditional enterprise software.

Cotten underscored the current AI focus on large language models like ChatGPT, highlighting their creative and generative capabilities driven by non-deterministic algorithms. While powerful in certain aspects, these models exhibit limitations in precision tasks like pricing accuracy, crucial for sectors such as manufacturing. Cotten cautioned against deploying generative AI in sensitive areas like pricing, manufacturing, and healthcare due to reliability concerns.

Discussing cybersecurity risks associated with AI, Cotten warned of heightened threats posed by the ability to launch rapid, large-scale attacks using AI-powered bots. He highlighted the vulnerabilities in telecommunication systems due to AI’s capacity for swift and extensive calculations and attacks. Cotten expressed reservations about government regulation in addressing these risks, advocating instead for investments in cybersecurity companies and research to combat emerging threats effectively.

In the realm of defense against cybersecurity threats, Cotten recommended a dual approach involving countermeasures and public awareness, particularly crucial for democracies like India. He emphasized the importance of governments investing in counterinsurgency efforts and enhancing capabilities to counter threat actors effectively.
