Indian-American Congressman Suhas Subramanyam expressed concern on Sunday over the negative effects of the ongoing shutdown crisis on Americans. He attributed the airport disruptions to House Republicans blocking a bipartisan Senate deal that had broad support and could have alleviated the situation. Subramanyam highlighted that the Senate proposal, backed by both parties, was obstructed by House Republicans, prolonging the airport chaos.
The Virginia Democrat refuted assertions that the Senate bill lacked funding for essential agencies, emphasizing its coverage of critical aspects of border operations and visa-related functions. He clarified that the proposal encompassed financing for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and part of Customs and Border Protection (CBP), contrary to claims suggesting otherwise. The shutdown has resulted in extensive airport delays, with unpaid Transportation Security Administration workers and ICE personnel assisting in operations.
Subramanyam lamented that the crisis could have been averted if the Senate proposal had been put to a vote in the House. He criticized the internal divisions within the Republican Party, noting that bipartisan support was present but not acted upon due to leadership decisions. The Congressman also highlighted the growing public frustration, particularly among travelers facing uncertainties during the shutdown, and emphasized the need for government accountability in decision-making processes.
On foreign policy matters, Subramanyam advocated for Congressional oversight regarding the deployment of US troops abroad. He urged President Donald Trump to seek approval from Congress before making such decisions, asserting that Americans should have a voice through their elected representatives.
