An Indian delegation engaged in discussions with the Danish State Secretary and the Maritime Security envoy regarding global security issues, particularly in the maritime sector, as stated by the Indian Embassy in Denmark. The dialogue marked the first Maritime Security Dialogue between India and Denmark, with representatives from both nations exploring avenues for enhanced cooperation. The meeting, led by Ms. Subhashini Narayanan from the Ministry of External Affairs, included discussions on the global security landscape, with a focus on maritime security concerns.
The Embassy highlighted that the dialogue emphasized the shared concerns of both Denmark and India regarding maritime security. Ambassador Rasmus Abildgaard Kristensen of Denmark to India mentioned the ongoing dialogue in Copenhagen, which also involved interactions with Danish defense companies operating in the maritime domain. The discussions aimed to deepen collaboration and address mutual challenges in maritime security.
During the 3rd India-Nordic Summit, a joint statement was issued by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Nordic leaders, including Denmark’s Acting Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to upholding a free, open, and peaceful Indo-Pacific region in line with international laws, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. They expressed readiness to engage in joint initiatives under the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI) and the ‘MAHASAGAR’ vision for regional security and growth.
The MEA highlighted the leaders’ focus on combatting Illicit Maritime Activities (IMA) such as piracy, contraband smuggling, and Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing. The establishment of Maritime Security Dialogues with Norway and Denmark was acknowledged, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts to ensure the safety and security of seafarers through enhanced information sharing and inter-agency coordination.
