In Gulmarg, at 8700 feet above sea level, Bhavani Thekkeda Nanjunda, a 30-year-old daughter of a coffee farmer, clinched gold in the Nordic women’s 1.5 km sprint at the Khelo India Winter Games 2026. This victory marked a significant achievement for Bhavani, who had never experienced snow until she was 23. Her journey from the coffee-scented hills of Kodagu, Karnataka, to becoming a winter sports champion reflects her determination and perseverance.

Bhavani’s success extends beyond this recent win, as she had previously secured bronze medals in the 15-km and 10-km relays earlier in the season. Her triumph in Gulmarg not only showcased her athletic prowess but also symbolized a personal triumph over challenges and doubts. Bhavani’s dedication to winter sports, despite hailing from a region with no snow or skiing culture, underscores her resilience and passion for the sport.

Despite the lack of local infrastructure and support for winter sports in her hometown, Bhavani’s father’s unwavering belief in her abilities fueled her pursuit. Starting as a mountaineer in 2014, Bhavani transitioned to becoming a certified ski instructor and excelled in competitions, including winning a bronze medal at the 2025 FIS South America Cup. Her remarkable journey exemplifies the power of determination and support in overcoming obstacles.

Bhavani’s achievements have not only broken barriers for herself but also paved the way for aspiring athletes from unconventional backgrounds. She emphasizes the importance of early training, coaching, and access to facilities for nurturing talent in winter sports. Bhavani’s call for greater participation and support in winter sports reflects her commitment to inspiring the next generation of athletes from diverse regions across India.

In her pursuit of excellence, Bhavani acknowledges the crucial role played by institutions like the Army’s High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS) and the Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering (IISM) in honing her skills. She also highlights the support from the Jammu and Kashmir government and Reliance Foundation in promoting winter sports and providing opportunities for talented individuals like herself. Bhavani’s success story serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for aspiring athletes, transcending geographical boundaries and societal expectations.
