The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has set a goal to enhance its operational capabilities by increasing its fleet to 200 ships and 100 aircraft for monitoring the country’s maritime zones. The ICG maintains constant vigilance over India’s maritime frontiers through the deployment of ships and aircraft, ensuring round-the-clock surveillance and swift responses. Currently, the ICG operates a diverse fleet of 155 advanced ships, including interceptor boats, crafts, and hovercrafts, along with a versatile wing of 82 modern rotary surveillance aircraft.

The ICG is focused on bolstering its operational capabilities with an expanded fleet of ships and aircraft to create a robust shield safeguarding India’s maritime zones. The future plan aims at a significant expansion to reach 200 ships and 100 aircraft, enhancing the force’s maritime presence. Recently, the ICG organized a conference in New Delhi to discuss future platforms for fleet expansion with shipbuilders and design houses.

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) is currently constructing six Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels for the ICG, which will have an endurance of 5,000 nautical miles. These vessels will enable the ICG to extend its reach and conduct prolonged operations at sea. Equipped with advanced technology, including AI-based predictive maintenance systems and integrated management systems, these ships will enhance the ICG’s operational efficiency.

The ICG has initiated the acquisition of modern Air Cushion Vehicles (ACVs) to replace its aging fleet, ensuring a modern and efficient maritime surveillance system. The introduction of these advanced vessels and aircraft signifies the ICG’s commitment to strengthening its capabilities for safeguarding India’s maritime interests effectively.
