This marked India’s first goal in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in 23 years, with Sanfida becoming a historical figure on her senior debut. The 20-year-old player expressed a mix of joy for her goal and disappointment for the team’s loss.
Sanfida Nongrum’s football journey began in Shillong, Meghalaya, where she was introduced to the sport by her cousin brother. Starting with informal games at home, she later joined the Royal Wahingdoh FC academy at a young age.
Representing her district and state in youth tournaments, Sanfida’s dedication to training and playing led to her exposure in various competitions. Her progression eventually took her to Bengaluru, where she trained under former India goalkeeper Chitra Gangadharan.
