The Indian National Congress has devised a countrywide protest strategy named “MGNREGA Bachao Sangram” to oppose recent legislative modifications to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. The Congress Coordination Committee, overseeing the initiative, finalized a comprehensive action plan during a meeting on January 5.
Four essential documents have been distributed to AICC General Secretaries, state in-charges, and secretaries, instructing them to disseminate the information to Pradesh Congress Committees, District Congress Committees, and Block Congress Committees before January 8. Among these documents is a one-page pamphlet that units are required to translate into local languages and print in large quantities for distribution.
The pamphlets are slated to be distributed during district-level press conferences on January 10, statewide dharnas on January 11, and panchayat-level chaupals scheduled between January 12 and 29. Another document, a draft resolution opposing the MGNREGA amendments, will be shared with block and panchayat-level officials for discussion and adoption in gram sabhas nationwide on Republic Day, January 26.
Furthermore, a factsheet outlining key points comparing the original MGNREGA provisions with the new regulations has been prepared for internal circulation among party members. Additionally, a detailed task list has been issued for Congress workers at the panchayat level during the January 12-29 period. Directives have been given to AICC General Secretaries, state in-charges, and secretaries to participate in preparatory meetings at state capitals on January 8 to finalize translations, printing of materials, and scheduling of protests on January 11.
These meetings will also focus on ensuring the resolution reaches every gram sabha, with state-level connect centers connected to the National War Room tasked with monitoring and reporting on the execution of activities at block and lower levels.
