Indian Naval Sail Training Ship INS Sudarshini, currently in the US, might have to take a longer route back home due to escalating tensions between the US and Iran affecting vessel movements in the Strait of Hormuz.
INS Sudarshini, representing India during the ongoing Lokayan 2026 transoceanic expedition, recently participated in Sail4th 250 celebrations in New York and the Grand Parade of Sails in Boston as a maritime goodwill ambassador.
The ship, which embarked on a 10-month voyage from Kochi in January 2026, has covered 22,000 nautical miles across 13 countries, including port calls in France, Oman, Egypt, and the US.
As tensions persist, INS Sudarshini may need to decide between sailing through the Gulf of Aden or detouring around the Cape of Good Hope, potentially adding 3,500-4,000 nautical miles to its journey.
Despite being unarmed, the vessel, registered as a military ship, could face challenges passing through the Strait of Hormuz if conflicts continue, prompting considerations for alternative routes and replenishment arrangements.
Interacting with international counterparts in Boston, INS Sudarshini continues its diplomatic mission, fostering cultural exchanges and goodwill as it navigates through uncertain geopolitical waters.
