The Indian Navy is preparing to welcome its sixth Project 17A indigenous stealth frigate, INS Mahendragiri, in Visakhapatnam on Saturday. The frigate, named after the Mahendragiri mountain range, symbolizes resilience and strength. Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd in Mumbai, INS Mahendragiri is likely to join the Eastern Fleet.
Captain Saikat Chatterjee, the Commanding Officer of the ship, expressed pride in leading this modern stealth frigate. The motto of INS Mahendragiri, “Sthitpragyah, Raneshu, Aprajitah,” emphasizes steadfastness, wisdom, and invincibility in battle. The warship, designed by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, embodies excellence and reflects timeless values of duty, honor, and courage.
INS Mahendragiri incorporates advanced stealth features, a high degree of automation, and over 75% indigenous content. It is equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, including BrahMos and Barak-8 missile systems. The frigate, part of the largest and most advanced class built and operated by the Indian Navy, is capable of various maritime operations, including anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine missions.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will commission INS Mahendragiri into the Indian Navy, marking a significant milestone in the Project 17A program. The warship’s commissioning strengthens India’s position as a leading indigenous warship-building nation and enhances the country’s maritime capabilities. INS Mahendragiri will play a crucial role in safeguarding maritime interests and ensuring stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
