As India’s athletes excel at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president P.T. Usha emphasizes the crucial contribution of coaches behind the scenes. Usha highlights that every medal India secures is a testament to the dedication of its coaches who often work unnoticed compared to the athletes they train.

Coaches play a fundamental role in shaping athletes’ performances, investing years in honing talent, instilling confidence, and preparing athletes for their defining moments. While athletes bask in the limelight during competitions, coaches lay the groundwork through meticulous planning, recovery strategies, tactical discussions, and personalized support to ensure athletes remain mentally resilient under pressure.

The success of India’s weightlifters at the Commonwealth Games underscores the significance of the coach-athlete partnership. Chief coach Vijay Sharma, instrumental in guiding Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu to international acclaim, stands out for his pivotal role in India’s ascent as a weightlifting powerhouse. Assistant coaches and support staff complement his efforts by ensuring athletes are physically primed and mentally sharp during competitions.

India’s coaching expertise spans various disciplines, with athletics chief coach Radhakrishnan Nair leading a proficient team that caters to specialists in sprints, long-distance events, jumps, and throws. Notable athletes like Neeraj Chopra and Murali Sreeshankar benefit from close collaboration with their personal coaches, highlighting the personalized approach to coaching in the Indian contingent.

In swimming, coaches Nihar Ameen and Sandeep Sejwal leverage their technical acumen and competitive experience to equip Indian swimmers for international challenges. Boxing coaches meticulously analyze opponents, fine-tune strategies, and provide crucial advice during matches, where a few strategic words can sway the outcome in a tight contest.

The meticulous preparation and strong coach-athlete relationships were evident in India’s para athletes’ success, with a para powerlifting medal kicking off Team India’s campaign at the Commonwealth Games. Coaches like Jitender Pal Singh offer specialized guidance, unwavering support, and technical expertise to empower para athletes to shine on the global stage.

The IOA’s commitment to providing athletes across all disciplines with seasoned coaches and technical support underscores the importance of this investment not only in securing medals but also in fostering athlete well-being, confidence, and sustained success.
